USA Women Win Hockey Gold

The game began on February 21st and when 20 year old USA Goalie Maddie Rooney made the final stop in the shootout, it was February 22nd. The significance of the date is that 38 years earlier in Lake Placid, NY the USA Men’s Hockey Team defeated the heavily favored Russian Team on their way to winning their first gold medal in 20 years. That’s where the similarities end.

The Men’s team in 1980 didn’t win the gold medal that night against the Russians. That happened two days later. For the women, their win against Team Canada not only won the gold medal for the first time since 1998, it was redemption for losing against the same team four years ago after not being able to hold a 2-1 lead.

Just like in 1980 where you have the image of Mike Eruzione’s game winning goal forever engrained in your mind, the the game winner in the shootout, scored on a move titled “Oops I did it again…and again” by Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson will be forever remembered and replayed for years to come. Her sister Monique had tied the game in the third period. It was then left to the 20 year old goalie Rooney, who was up to the task, stuffing Agosta to preserve the win.

And 20 years of Olympic frustration and 4 straight gold medal wins by Team Canada was over.
